Ethiopian Spelling Bee is an English spelling competition for students in primary schools in Ethiopia, under the age of 16. This competition will help discover Ethiopia’s best young spellers; make spelling fun for children of all ages and to help parents develop their children’s’ talents as they learn.

AIM

Our aim is to help our students improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn new words and correct use of the English language. Ethiopian Spelling Bee also encourages youths, parents, teachers, businesses and the community at large to participate in the development of the education process. The competition also provides students with the opportunity to develop healthy competitive skills as well as improving their self-esteem and in the process build a solid foundation for their future careers.

More than 500,000 students participated in this year’s Ethiopian Spelling Bee at one level or another. To prepare, students used study materials created by Ethiopian Spelling Bee and Ethiopian American Spelling Bee staff and Merriam-Webster using our official dictionary: Webster’s Third New International Dictionary and its addenda section.

All of the spellers here have advanced to the Ethiopian Spelling Bee by winning a series of spelling bees as outlined by our guidelines. In general terms, the program is open to students who are 16 years old or younger, have not passed beyond eighth grade and attend schools officially enrolled with our program for the current academic year
